ISO 29001 Awareness Training: Oil and Gas Sector Quality for Suppliers and Service Companies

ISO 29001 awareness training for crews, technicians, inspectors, buyers and engineers at companies that supply products and services to oil, gas and petrochemical operators. Your company may be preparing for ISO 29001 certification because an operator now requires it, or a customer audit found that people in the workshop and the field did not know the quality requirements behind their own jobs: the management of change, the hold point, the competence record, the specification in the purchase order.

This training course explains ISO 29001:2020 in plain language: how the full ISO 9001:2015 text and the oil and gas sector supplements fit together, and what they mean for risk and change, equipment maintenance, validated competence, specifications, contingency plans, external providers, Annex C conformity assessment, preservation and release. You follow an oilfield services company in Houston, so every requirement shows up in real field and workshop work.

ISO 29001 awareness training explains ISO 29001:2020, the sector-specific quality management standard for organisations that supply products and services to the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries. It covers how the standard adds sector supplements to ISO 9001:2015, risk and management of change, equipment, competence, specifications, external providers, Annex C conformity assessment and each person's role.

Standard and editionISO 29001:2020 Petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries QMS

Last updated31 October 2026

Why ISO 29001 matters now: what regulators found in the supply chain

In oil and gas, one wrong bolt, seal or fitting from deep in the supply chain can become a leak, a shutdown or an injury. Regulators keep tracing incidents back to supplier quality.

In March 2023, the US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement issued Safety Alert 458 about a July 2020 leak of about 479 barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico from a flange joint on a subsea jumper. Four of the eight studs had broken through hydrogen embrittlement. The studs installed did not comply with the fastener standard required for that service, the procurement documents had not required it, there was a gap in quality assurance and quality control, and management of change was not followed. Every one of those causes maps to a requirement in ISO 29001.

In December 2024, the Canada Energy Regulator issued Safety Advisory SA 2024-01 on pipeline fitting materials quality assurance, after continued notifications of materials that did not meet standards or company specifications. It expects a quality assurance programme that keeps nonconforming materials out of the supply chain, identification and testing of suspect components, and notification within 15 days. The course uses both cases as questions for your own work.

Who this ISO 29001 awareness training course is for

The course is for everyone at a product or service supplier to the oil, gas and petrochemical industries, not only the quality team. No prior knowledge of ISO standards is needed.

You need it when your company is preparing for its first ISO 29001 certification, when an operator's audit or bid requires it, when you join the company or a new site, or when you take on a role such as inspector, buyer or document controller where quality requirements land on your desk.

  • Field crews and supervisors
  • Workshop technicians and inspectors
  • Engineers, planners and document controllers
  • Buyers and procurement staff
  • Quality and HSE teams and managers of oilfield service companies, manufacturers, fabricators and stockists

What you will learn

By the end you will understand what the standard asks of your company and where your own job fits.

  • Explain what ISO 29001:2020 is, who it applies to and how it relates to ISO 9001 and API Spec Q1
  • Describe the sector supplements on context, risk processes and management of change
  • Recognise the requirements for infrastructure, measuring equipment and validated competence
  • Explain how specifications, contingency plans and customer requirements reach the work
  • Describe how Annex C uses risk to set quality specification levels and conformity checks

ISO 29001:2020 explained

ISO 29001:2020 is the quality management system standard for product and service supply organisations to the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries. The first edition of the full standard was published in May 2020, replacing the technical specification ISO/TS 29001:2010, and it was confirmed in 2025. It is written as a supplement to ISO 9001:2015: the complete ISO 9001 text appears in boxes, and the sector supplements around it add requirements developed to manage supply chain risks and opportunities in the industry. In February 2024 an amendment added climate action statements to clauses 4.1 and 4.2, as for many management system standards, without changing their overall intent.

The supplements touch almost every clause. Key ones include documented risk processes and management of change, maintenance and reuse of equipment, validated competence matched to risk, inspection and test plans and the integration of specifications into the work, contingency plans, tighter control of external providers, and controls on preservation and release. Annex C explains how customers and suppliers use risk to set a quality specification level, the extent of testing, inspection, verification and validation, and the conformity checks that follow, cascaded down the supply chain.

ISO/TC 67 has said that customer-approved quality processes under complementary standards such as API Spec Q1 or Q2 are accepted for the relevant requirements. API Spec Q1, now in its 10th edition, is API's own specification, widely used by manufacturers; Module 2 explains how the two relate.

How the course works

The training course is 11 on-demand video modules, about 2 hours of video in total. Practice questions after each module help you check your understanding before you move on.

At the end you take a scenario-based multiple-choice final exam drawn from the course's question bank. Complete the course and its assessed final exam (pass mark 70%, one retake included) and you receive a Sterling Academy Certificate of Completion. You study online, on any device, at your own pace, so crews can complete modules between rotations.

What you can do after the course

Awareness pays off at the point of work.

  • Recognise when a change to equipment, people, process or supplier needs management of change
  • Check that the specification and quality specification level in an order have reached the job
  • Respect hold points in an inspection and test plan and know who may release them
  • Keep maintenance, calibration and competence records an auditor or customer will accept
  • Spot suspect or nonconforming material, quarantine it and report it
  • Explain to an auditor how your work supports the quality policy and objectives

For teams and organisations

ISO 29001 extends awareness to people working under your control, including external providers' personnel where relevant. A company plan lets a client administrator add staff, assign courses and follow progress reports, with one invoice for your organisation.

Part 1Why oil and gas quality matters and the standard at a glanceApprox. 23 min

  1. Why sector quality matters in oil and gas11 min

ISO 29001 awareness: why oil and gas quality management matters, shown through a BSEE offshore safety alert, and how the course works.

    What this module covers

Opens with the business case: for a supplier in oil and gas, quality is how you win and keep work, and how you stay on operators' approved supplier lists. Presents BSEE Safety Alert number 458, published in March 2023, on a leak into the Gulf of Mexico, and how a missing requirement, a missed check and an unmanaged change led to it. Shows how operators, contractors and their own providers form one supply chain, down to studs, seals and chemicals, with a subsea services contractor in Aberdeen. Introduces UVW Well Services, an oilfield services company in Houston preparing for its first ISO 29001:2020 certification. Explains the eleven modules, what the course is and is not, and how you learn, then ends with a recap.

What you will be able to do

    • Explain why every link in the supply chain carries the customer's risk
    • Describe how a missed requirement, check or change can lead to a leak
    • State why the standard expects awareness from everyone, including providers

    Why it matters

Seeing how small quality gaps led to a real leak shows why your checks and records matter on every job.

Practice: Practice: Why sector quality matters in oil and gas · 3 questions

  2. The standard at a glance12 min

    What this module covers

Starts with the business case for a shared sector standard: one set of requirements instead of a different questionnaire and audit for every bid, and what to write on a customer's prequalification form. Explains where the standard comes from and its two layers: the ISO 9001:2015 text printed in boxes, unaltered, and the sector requirements outside them. Covers key terms: quality specification level, the competence catalogue and related competence terms, and the inspection and test plan as a quality plan in table form. Sets out the 2020 edition, confirmed in 2025, and the climate action amendment of February 2024, with a fabrication yard in Singapore as an example. Ends with how API Spec Q1 or Q2 processes can count toward ISO 29001, and a recap.

Part 2Context, risk, objectives and planningApprox. 21 min

  1. Context, interested parties and leadership11 min

ISO 29001 context of the organisation, interested parties, scope of the quality management system, processes and leadership duties.

    What this module covers

Opens with the business case for knowing your context in a sector that moves in cycles, so key checks and skills survive a downturn instead of leaving with experienced people. Explains how the organisation determines its external and internal issues and its interested parties, and the first sector supplement: documented information that shows this understanding. Shows UVW's context analysis, kept as a reviewed document, including how its work rises and falls with drilling activity. Covers the scope, justified exclusions shared with interested parties on request, records whose extent follows what those parties need, and the processes of the system, with a pipeline maintenance contractor in Calgary. Ends with top management's accountability for the quality policy and documented responsibilities and authorities, and a recap.

What you will be able to do

    • Explain how context and interested parties shape the quality system
    • Describe a justified scope and how exclusions are shared
    • Identify what top management must do and document

    Why it matters

Companies that read their context early protect the checks and people that quality depends on when activity falls.

Practice: Practice: Context, interested parties and leadership · 3 questions

  2. Risk, opportunity and change10 min

ISO 29001 actions to address risks and opportunities, measurable quality objectives, and planning of changes in oil and gas services.

    What this module covers

Starts with the business case: in this sector the cost of a failure grows with distance, so likely failures should be found in planning, not at the wellsite. Explains how risks and opportunities are determined and addressed in proportion to their impact, through a defined process with documented information, as the supplement requires. Shows an extract from the UVW risk register, where each control has an owner and a review date, and why staff who see something that could fail should report it. Covers measurable, monitored and owned quality objectives, using three objectives UVW has set this year, each with a plan. Then returns to the safety alert from Module 1 to show planned change, with a pipe and valve stockist in Dubai as a further example. Ends with a recap.

What you will be able to do

    • Explain how risks are addressed in proportion to their impact
    • Write a measurable quality objective with an owner and a plan
    • Explain why unmanaged change contributes to failures

    Why it matters

Finding a likely failure in planning costs far less than finding it at the wellsite, in front of the customer.

Practice: Practice: Risk, opportunity and change · 3 questions

Part 3Infrastructure, competence and documented informationApprox. 32 min

  1. Infrastructure, equipment and measurement11 min

ISO 29001 infrastructure maintenance, service equipment history, calibration of monitoring and measuring equipment, and organisational knowledge.

    What this module covers

Opens with the business case: for a service company, the equipment is the service, and customers remember uptime at the next tender. Explains infrastructure maintained to a documented method, with outcomes, acceptance criteria and responsible people recorded, covering UVW's workshop and test bay, wireline trucks, rental fleet and software. Shows how UVW's rental fleet works: each item of pressure-control equipment carries a serial number and its history, so reuse can be verified, with critical spare parts listed and risk-based maintenance as an option. Covers unique identification and traceable calibration of measuring devices in a measuring equipment register, and a fabrication yard in Singapore that traced a faulty wrench to fourteen flanges and told the customer. Ends with organisational knowledge and a recap.

What you will be able to do

    • Explain what documented maintenance of infrastructure must record
    • Describe how equipment history supports verified reuse
    • Check that measuring devices are in a register with traceable calibration

    Why it matters

Practice: Practice: Infrastructure, equipment and measurement · 3 questions

  2. Competence, awareness and communication10 min

ISO 29001 competence and its validation to task risk, awareness requirements for staff and providers, and planned communication.

    What this module covers

Starts with the business case: in services, the crew is the quality, so crews should be matched to the job by competence, not availability. Explains how competence is determined and evidenced, and the supplement's requirement to validate it to the risk level of the task through defined practices. Shows one profile from the UVW competence model: a wireline crew lead for high-pressure wells, with skills required at expert or proficient level and validation by a senior engineer's field assessment, renewed every two years. Covers the common mistake of a training matrix full of course certificates, and awareness of policy, objectives, customer and regulated requirements and risk mitigations, for providers' staff too, with a subsea services contractor in Aberdeen. Ends with planned communication, including the shift change on a long job, and a recap.

What you will be able to do

    • Explain the difference between trained and validated competence
    • Describe what awareness covers, including for providers' staff
    • Plan communication: what, when, with whom, how and by whom

    Why it matters

Matching crews by validated competence means jobs go right first time and customers ask for the same crew again.

Practice: Practice: Competence, awareness and communication · 3 questions

  3. Documents, records and specifications11 min

ISO 29001 control of documented information, integration of external specifications and updates, and inspection and test plans (ITPs).

    What this module covers

Opens with the business case: contracts are built on specifications, and uncontrolled old copies live on in trucks, desk drawers and email inboxes. Explains how documented information is identified, approved, available, protected and version-controlled, with evidence of conformity protected from unintended alteration. Covers the supplement's requirement to integrate external specifications, including addenda, errata and updates, into operating processes, shown in UVW's process from the document controller logging a revision to updated procedures and purchase order templates and briefed staff. Returns to the safety alert from Module 1 on flowing specifications down, with a pipeline maintenance contractor in Calgary. Ends with an extract from the inspection and test plan UVW's workshop uses to recertify pressure-control equipment, and a recap.

What you will be able to do

    • Describe how external specification updates are integrated into work
    • Read an inspection and test plan and what it brings together

    Why it matters

When the current specification reaches everyone who needs it, the work matches the contract and the records show it.

Practice: Practice: Documents, records and specifications · 3 questions

Part 4Operations, external providers, production and performanceApprox. 44 min

  1. Planning, customer requirements and design11 min

ISO 29001 operational planning, contingency planning, review of customer requirements and contract review, and design and development.

    What this module covers

Starts with the business case for planning and contract review, since a contract signed blind brings hidden tests, witness points and certificates on site. Explains planning operations around the customer's scope, often in a quality plan or inspection and test plan, shown by UVW planning the same perforating service differently for a land well in Texas and a deepwater well offshore. Shows the contingency plan UVW writes for a wireline unit failing on an offshore platform, with roles and responsibility, communication and immediate actions. Covers reviewing requirements through a defined process before committing, with a pipe and valve stockist in Dubai bidding to supply valves for a gas plant that adds a question to its review checklist. Ends with design that builds in risk, environmental and safety conditions, and a recap.

What you will be able to do

    • Plan operations around the customer's scope, with change management
    • Write a contingency plan with roles, communication and immediate actions
    • Review customer requirements before committing to a contract

    Why it matters

Reviewing requirements before signing means the job is one you can actually deliver, at the price you quoted.

Practice: Practice: Planning, customer requirements and design · 3 questions

  2. External providers and conformity assessment11 min

ISO 29001 control of external providers and Annex C risk classification, quality specification levels and conformity assessment.

    What this module covers

Opens with the business case for controlling providers, so problems are stopped at the gate before parts are fitted, shipped or used on a well. Explains how external providers are evaluated and monitored, and the supplement's requirement to assess their performance at planned intervals and adjust controls to the risk. Shows a regulator's recent warning: the December 2024 safety advisory from the Canada Energy Regulator on pipeline fitting materials quality assurance, and the studs from the Module 1 safety alert. Covers what the information for providers must state, from approval of products and release to competence and verification, then Annex C, which classifies risk and uses it to set the quality specification level and the conformity assessment system, cascaded down the chain. Ends with hold, witness, surveillance and review points at a subsea services contractor in Aberdeen, and a recap.

What you will be able to do

    • Explain how provider controls are set in proportion to risk
    • Describe how Annex C links risk to the conformity assessment system
    • Explain the purpose of hold, witness, surveillance and review points

    Why it matters

A provider's problem becomes your problem in front of your customer; checks matched to risk stop it at the gate.

Practice: Practice: External providers and conformity assessment · 3 questions

  3. Production, preservation and release11 min

ISO 29001 production and service provision: special process validation, traceability, preservation, control of changes, release and nonconforming outputs.

    What this module covers

Starts with the business case: controlled work is accepted first time, while uncontrolled work is rejected at the rig, recalled from the field or disputed for months. Explains controlled conditions, actions to prevent human error such as checklists and independent checks, and why a checklist is not enough on its own. Shows validation of special processes in the UVW workshop, where welding repairs once done by any available welder are now controlled, considering equipment, competence, methods, parameters, acceptance criteria and revalidation. Covers traceability and customer or provider property, risk-based preservation at a pipe and valve stockist in Dubai storing elastomer seals in a hot store, and controlled changes in key personnel, critical providers and design. Ends with release after planned checks, nonconforming outputs, and a recap.

What you will be able to do

    • Explain what validating a special process must consider
    • Apply risk-based preservation to stored parts and materials
    • Check that planned checks are complete before release

    Why it matters

What leaves your gate carries your name; traceable, protected and checked work avoids rejections and long disputes.

Practice: Practice: Production, preservation and release · 3 questions

  4. Evaluation, improvement and your role11 min

ISO 29001 performance evaluation: monitoring and analysis, risk-based internal audit, management review, corrective action, improvement and your role.

    What this module covers

Opens with the business case: measured performance shows where quality slips, while guesswork lets the same failures return job after job. Explains monitoring and analysis through defined processes, and why a full spreadsheet that no one reads improves nothing. Shows the data UVW brings together, from job tickets showing repeat call-outs to equipment history. Covers internal audit intervals that follow the risk of each process and its results, with UVW auditing pressure testing and release quarterly, management review that turns findings into decisions, corrective action that removes causes, and improvement managed as a change, with a pipeline maintenance contractor in Calgary. Ends by bringing everything back to your own role, a recap, and the final exam.

What you will be able to do

    • Explain how performance data shows where quality slips
    • Describe how internal audit intervals follow the risk of each process
    • Explain how nonconformities are corrected and their causes removed

    Why it matters

Using data instead of opinion puts effort where it pays back and means customers see fewer repeat problems.

What is ISO 29001 awareness training?

ISO 29001 awareness training explains ISO 29001:2020 to the people who work at oil and gas suppliers. It covers how the standard adds sector supplements to ISO 9001:2015, risk and management of change, equipment and measurement, validated competence, specifications, external providers, Annex C, preservation, release and each person's role.

Who needs ISO 29001 training?

Everyone at a supplier of products or services to the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries benefits: field crews, workshop technicians, inspectors, engineers, buyers, document controllers, quality and HSE teams and managers at service companies, manufacturers, fabricators and stockists. No prior knowledge of ISO standards is needed.

What is the difference between ISO 29001 and ISO 9001?

ISO 29001:2020 contains the full ISO 9001:2015 text and adds sector supplements for the oil and gas supply chain, such as management of change, validated competence, inspection and test plans, contingency plans, stronger supplier controls and Annex C on risk-based conformity assessment.

What is the difference between ISO 29001 and API Spec Q1?

ISO 29001 is an ISO standard for product and service suppliers to the sector; API Spec Q1 is API's own quality specification, widely used by manufacturers and now in its 10th edition. ISO/TC 67 accepts customer-approved processes under complementary standards such as API Spec Q1 for the relevant requirements.

Is ISO 29001:2020 the current edition?

Yes. ISO 29001:2020 is the current edition, published in May 2020 and confirmed in 2025. An amendment published in February 2024 added climate action statements to clauses 4.1 and 4.2. Module 2 explains both, and the course teaches the standard as it stands today, including the sector supplements to every clause.

How long does the ISO 29001 awareness course take?

The course has about 2 hours of video across 11 modules. Allow a little extra time for the practice questions after each module and for the final exam. You can complete it in one sitting or between shifts and rotations.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. Complete the course and the scenario-based multiple-choice final exam, drawn from the course's question bank and assessed with a pass mark of 70%, and you receive a Sterling Academy Certificate of Completion. One retake is included. The certificate records your training; certification of the company is done by a certification body.

How much does ISO 29001 awareness training cost?

The course costs US$19 per learner, with online access on any device. Companies that want to train crews, workshop staff and office teams together can ask for a quote for a company plan with a client administrator, progress reports and one invoice.

Does the course help meet the ISO 29001 awareness requirement?

Yes. Clause 7.3 expects people doing work under the organisation's control to be aware of the quality policy, objectives, their contribution and the implications of not conforming, and the sector supplement extends awareness of quality requirements, risk mitigations and conformity checks to external providers' personnel. The course helps you achieve and record it.

Can my team take the course together?

Yes. With a company plan, a client administrator adds field, workshop and office staff, assigns the course and follows progress through reports, so you have training records ready for customer and certification audits. Get a quote for your organisation to start.
