Manufacturing customers buy consistency. They want the same part, to the same specification, delivered on time, every time, from a supplier that finds and fixes its own problems before they reach the customer's line. Certification bodies, automotive OEMs and large industrial buyers all check for that, and the first thing they look at is the people: do they know the system they work in, can they solve problems properly, and is there evidence?
The standards make the same demand. ISO 9001 asks you to define the competence each role needs, make sure people have it and keep evidence, and to make people aware of the quality policy and how their work contributes. ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 ask the same for environmental and health and safety roles, and ISO 50001 for people who affect energy performance. IATF 16949, the automotive quality management standard, goes further: it expects competence in the automotive core tools, specific competence for internal auditors, including knowledge of the core tools and customer-specific requirements, and on-the-job training for anyone whose work affects product quality.
Auditors test this on the floor. They ask an operator what the control plan says for the characteristic they are checking. They ask a quality engineer to walk through the last 8D report and show how the root cause was proven. They ask an internal auditor how they were trained. They compare the training matrix with the people actually doing the work. A gap in any of these becomes a finding.
Manufacturers also run on shifts and tight schedules. Taking a line off production for a classroom day costs output, and new people join all the time. Online training, taken on any device in short sessions, fits the way a plant actually runs.
Sterling Academy brings Sterling's classroom training online, with the same content, available 24/7. Each course ends with a final exam, and each person who completes it receives a verifiable certificate with a QR code that an auditor, a customer or a certification body can check. Sterling's classroom training certificates have been accepted by certification bodies at client audits, and the Academy carries the same content.
What each role in a manufacturing company needs to know
Every employee. Shop-floor and office staff need the foundation: what the quality management system is and how their work affects the customer, how they protect the environment in their job, how to work safely, and how they affect energy use. The pack gives them ISO 9001:2026 Awareness, ISO 14001 Awareness, ISO 45001 Awareness and ISO 50001 Energy Management Awareness.
Quality engineers. Quality and process engineers solve the problems that matter most and prevent the next ones. They need structured problem solving and the statistical and risk tools behind it. The pack gives them Root Cause Analysis & CAPA, FMEA: Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, The 7 QC Tools, SPC: Statistical Process Control Training and MSA: Measurement Systems Analysis Training.
Automotive suppliers. Teams working to IATF 16949 need the standard and the core tools their customers expect. The pack gives them IATF 16949 Awareness and 8D Problem Solving: Eight Disciplines Training; FMEA, SPC and MSA, the other core tools, are on the quality engineers' card. APQP and PPAP courses are in preparation.
Internal auditors. Every management system needs internal audits, and IATF 16949 sets specific competence requirements for them. The pack gives your auditors Integrated Management System (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001) Internal Auditor Training, IATF 16949 Internal Auditor Training and ISO 19011, the international guidance on auditing management systems.
How the courses work
- Online and on demand. Learners study on a computer, tablet or phone, 24/7, at their own pace. Each course page shows the total learning time, including module quizzes, exercises and the final exam, so supervisors can plan it around production.
- Built from real classroom training. The content is the same as Sterling's classroom training, built by industry experts, domain specialist trainers and globally renowned auditors with 30+ years in ISO and GRC. Each course page has a sample video.
- Practical examples. The examples come from working manufacturing and engineering companies, so operators and engineers recognise the situations they meet.
- A real final exam. Each course ends with an assessed final exam. Awareness courses need 70% for the certificate; practitioner courses, which lead to a Certificate of Competence, need 60%. The retake rule is explained on each course page.
- A certificate anyone can verify. Each person who completes a course receives a certificate with a QR code. Learners can share a badge on LinkedIn.
- 12 months' access. Each course, and each pass, gives 12 months' access.
Courses or a pass: the cheapest way to buy
Each role card shows the courses that role needs, the price one by one, and a pass when it is close to or cheaper than the courses. We mark the cheaper option as best value and never show a saving that is not real.
For quality engineers, who need several practitioner courses, the All-Access Pass opens every course in the catalogue, including the automotive core tools, so an engineer who also supports an automotive customer has everything. For the other roles, the card shows at today's prices whether the listed courses or a pass is cheaper, and marks that option as best value.
If one person needs most of the pack, for example a quality manager who also leads automotive programmes and audits, the All-Access Pass opens all 14 courses on this page, and every other course, for US$499 per person for 12 months.
A pass also removes a decision people tend to put off. Once a learner holds a pass, adding a course for a new customer, a new regulation or a new job costs nothing more for the rest of the 12 months, and that is often when the second and third courses get taken.
From 11 learners every price drops by 20% per person, and from 51 by 30%. You can mix plans in one order.
Evidence for auditors and customers
The first kind of evidence is the certificate for each person: named, dated, tied to a specific course and final exam, and verifiable by QR code.
The second is the company console. Your administrator invites people, assigns each person only the courses their role needs, and sees who has started, who is in progress, who has stalled and who has finished, by course and by person. That makes the training matrix easy to keep up to date.
The third is the report. You can download training records for a certification audit, a customer's supplier audit or your management review.
A final exam result for each person also gives you objective evidence that training was understood, which IATF 16949 and ISO 9001 auditors increasingly ask about when they look at training effectiveness.
A training plan for a manufacturer
Update the training matrix. List roles and the competence each needs. The four role cards are a starting point; add the courses your products, processes and customers need.
Awareness for everyone. Assign the every-employee courses to all staff, starting with new joiners and the areas with the most quality, safety or environmental risk.
Problem solving for engineers. Quality and process engineers take their courses next. Use the next real problem as the exercise: a team that has just learned root cause analysis and 8D applies it straight away.
Core tools before the next launch. Automotive teams take FMEA, SPC and MSA before the next new part launch, so the plan and the controls are built right.
Audit before the auditor. Internal auditors complete their courses before the next audit cycle.
Repeat every year. Use the console to see whose training is due.
Training gaps auditors often find in manufacturing
Training matrix out of date. People change jobs, new machines arrive, and the matrix stays the same. Auditors compare it with the floor.
Root causes not proven. Corrective actions that end with "operator retrained" or "reminded to be careful" rarely satisfy an automotive customer. Engineers trained in structured problem solving prove the root cause and verify the fix.
Core tools used as paperwork. FMEAs written after launch, control plans copied from the last part and MSA studies never done are common findings. Training explains why each tool exists, so it is used when it adds value.
Internal auditors who do not meet IATF competence rules. IATF 16949 requires internal auditors to understand the automotive process approach, the core tools and customer-specific requirements. Auditor training with a certificate is the simplest evidence.
Environmental and safety awareness missing for contractors. Contractors and temporary workers on site need the same awareness as employees.
Energy treated as a cost line, not a system. ISO 50001 expects people who affect significant energy use to be competent. Awareness for everyone and training for the energy team close the gap.
Quality, environment, safety and energy: one integrated system
Most manufacturers run more than one management system. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 50001 share the same structure: context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. IATF 16949 builds on ISO 9001 with automotive requirements.
Running them as one integrated system saves effort: one document structure, one internal audit programme, one management review and one training matrix. Certification bodies can often audit them together, which shortens audit days.
The courses follow the same approach. The every-employee card covers all four awareness topics in one pack, and the internal auditor card uses the integrated management system course, which trains auditors to check ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 in one audit.
From data to decisions: measurement and statistics on the floor
Many quality problems in manufacturing are really measurement problems. A gauge that cannot tell a good part from a bad one, a process that drifts without anyone noticing, a capability figure calculated on too little data: each leads to wrong decisions, scrap, rework or escapes to the customer.
Three tools on the quality engineers' card deal with this directly. Measurement systems analysis checks that a gauge or test method is good enough for the job before anyone trusts its readings. Statistical process control watches a process over time and separates normal variation from a real change, so operators act when they should and leave the process alone when they should not. The 7 QC tools, from check sheets and Pareto charts to cause-and-effect diagrams and scatter plots, give every team a simple, shared way to look at data and agree on what it shows.
These tools work best when they are used by the people closest to the process, not only by engineers. Many plants train team leaders and senior operators on the 7 QC tools and SPC as well, so problems are seen and raised early.
Customers notice the difference. An automotive or industrial customer that sees control charts in use on the floor, measurement studies on file for critical gauges and problems solved with data, not opinion, gains confidence in the supplier quickly.
Engineering and project-based companies
Not every manufacturer runs a production line. Engineering firms, fabricators, equipment builders and project-based companies work to ISO 9001 as well, often with ISO 45001 for site safety and ISO 14001 for environmental performance. For them, the most valuable courses are usually ISO 9001 implementation, root cause analysis, FMEA for design and process risk, and supplier evaluation for subcontractors. The quality engineers' and internal auditors' cards cover most of these, and the catalogue adds ISO 55001 asset management and ISO 41001 facility management awareness for companies that operate and maintain what they build.

Frequently asked questions
Do certification auditors accept these certificates?
Each certificate names the learner, the course and the date, and can be checked online by QR code. Sterling Academy courses carry the same content as Sterling's classroom training, whose certificates have been accepted by certification bodies at client audits.
Does the IATF 16949 internal auditor course meet the standard's auditor competence rules?
The course covers the automotive process approach, the requirements of IATF 16949 and how the core tools are audited. Combined with the core tools courses and your customers' specific requirements, it gives your auditors the competence the standard describes, with a certificate as evidence.
Can operators take the courses on the shop floor?
Yes. Every course runs on a phone, tablet or computer, 24/7, in short sessions that fit around shifts.
Do the core tools courses follow AIAG manuals?
The courses teach the methods automotive customers expect for FMEA, SPC and MSA. Always check your customers' specific requirements for the manual editions and forms they want.
How often should staff be retrained?
Your training procedure decides. Many manufacturers refresh awareness every year and retrain when processes change. Each course and pass gives 12 months' access.
We are not in automotive. Do we need the core tools?
Not for certification, but many non-automotive manufacturers use FMEA, SPC and MSA because they work. The quality engineers' card includes them for that reason.
Can we train several plants in one account?
Yes. Your administrator invites people from every site into the same console and sees progress by course and by person.
Can Sterling help us get certified?
Yes. Sterling's consultants help manufacturers and engineering companies achieve ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001 and IATF 16949 certification. Ask for a team proposal on this page.
Can we see a course before we buy it for the team?
Yes. Every course page has a sample video and the full outline. Many companies start with root cause analysis for the quality team, then roll out awareness to the floor.
Do you cover Lean or Six Sigma?
The catalogue covers the quality tools that Lean and Six Sigma programmes use, including root cause analysis, the 7 QC tools, SPC, MSA and FMEA. Dedicated Lean Six Sigma belt courses are not in the catalogue yet.
Can our suppliers train with us?
Yes. Your administrator can invite people from supplier companies and assign them the courses they need, or suppliers can buy their own places. Each person receives their own certificate, which helps you show that your supply chain is competent too.
Is there training for energy management?
Yes. ISO 50001 awareness is on the every-employee card, and the catalogue includes ISO 14064 greenhouse gas accounting for companies whose customers ask for carbon data. Energy-intensive plants often start with both, then add ISO 50001 implementation support from a Sterling consultant.
Who sees our learners' results?
Your company's administrators see the progress and results of your people in the console, and each learner sees their own progress, results and certificates.
