Why healthcare teams train with Sterling Academy

Healthcare runs on two kinds of trust. Patients trust you with their lives and with the most private information they have. Payers, partners and regulators trust you to protect that information and to deliver care that is safe and consistent every time. When either kind of trust breaks, the cost is high: a data breach that reaches the news, a regulator's investigation, a lost contract with a payer or hospital group, or worse, harm to a patient.

Most failures in both areas start with people, not technology. A nurse emails a discharge summary to the wrong address. A receptionist reads a patient's details aloud in a waiting room. A billing clerk clicks a link in a convincing phishing email and opens the network to ransomware. A laboratory technician skips a step in a procedure because the shift is short-staffed. A quality lead closes a complaint without finding the real cause, and the same problem comes back. Each of these is a training problem before it is anything else.

The rules that apply to you say the same. In the United States, the HIPAA Privacy Rule requires you to train your workforce on your privacy policies and procedures, and the HIPAA Security Rule requires a security awareness and training programme for every member of the workforce. ISO/IEC 27001 asks you to decide the competence each role needs and keep evidence that people have it. ISO 7101, the ISO management system standard for quality in healthcare organisations, and ISO 9001 both ask for competent people and records of their training. ISO 15189 asks medical laboratories to show that each person is competent for the work they do. Auditors, assessors and accreditation bodies will ask to see that evidence, person by person.

Healthcare also makes training hard to schedule. Clinical staff work rotating shifts, nights and weekends. Taking a ward or a laboratory team off duty for a classroom day is rarely possible, and agency and part-time staff join throughout the year. Training that people can take online, on a phone or a computer, in short sessions at any hour, fits a hospital or clinic far better than a fixed classroom date.

Sterling Academy brings Sterling's classroom training online, with the same content, available 24/7. Each course ends with a final exam, and each person who completes it receives a verifiable certificate with a QR code that an employer, an auditor or an accreditation body can check. Sterling's classroom training certificates have been accepted by certification bodies at client audits, and the Academy carries the same content.

What each role in healthcare needs to know

Healthcare organisations have very different people under one roof: clinicians, administrators, IT staff, laboratory scientists and managers. Giving them all the same long course wastes their time. The healthcare pack above is built by role.

Every staff member. Anyone who sees or handles patient information, clinical or not, needs the basics: what counts as protected health information, the minimum-necessary rule, how to share information safely, how to spot phishing and social engineering, what to do with paper records and screens, and how to report a suspected breach straight away. The pack combines HIPAA Awareness, Information Security Essentials and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Awareness for privacy and security, ISO 7101:2023 Awareness Training (Healthcare Quality Management) for the quality management side of care, and AI Literacy & Responsible Use of Generative AI, because staff are already using AI tools and need to know what patient information must never be put into them.

Privacy and security officers. Your privacy officer, security officer and compliance team run the programme. They need to know how to put HIPAA into practice, how to assess and manage risk, how to judge the privacy impact of a new system or data flow, and how to use a recognised cybersecurity framework to organise the work. The pack gives them HIPAA Implementation Training, NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0 Training, DPIA & Records of Processing and Risk Management.

Quality and laboratory. Quality leads build and run the quality management system; clinical laboratory staff work under ISO 15189. They need to know how to implement the standard, how to find the real cause of a problem and fix it, and how to set objectives and review performance with management. The pack gives them ISO 9001:2026 Implementation Training, ISO 15189:2022 Implementation Training, Root Cause Analysis & CAPA and KPIs, Objectives & Management Review.

Internal auditors. Every management system needs internal audits before the external assessor arrives. Your internal auditors need to know the standards and how to audit them well. The pack gives them the internal auditor courses for ISO 9001, ISO 15189 and ISO/IEC 27001, with ISO 19011, the international guidance on auditing management systems.

How the courses work

Every Sterling Academy course follows the same pattern.

  • Online and on demand. Learners study on a computer, tablet or phone, 24/7, at their own pace, and can stop and continue where they left off. Each course page shows the total learning time, including module quizzes, exercises and the final exam, so a ward manager can plan it into the roster.
  • Built from real classroom training. The content is the same as Sterling's classroom training, built by industry experts, domain specialist trainers and globally renowned auditors with 30+ years in ISO and GRC. Each course page has a sample video.
  • Practical examples. The examples come from working organisations, including hospitals, clinics and laboratories, so staff recognise the situations they meet every day.
  • A real final exam. Each course ends with an assessed final exam. Awareness courses need 70% for the certificate; practitioner courses, which lead to a Certificate of Competence, need 60%. The retake rule is explained on each course page.
  • A certificate anyone can verify. Each person who completes a course receives a certificate with a QR code that an auditor or accreditation assessor can check online. Learners can share a badge on LinkedIn.
  • 12 months' access. Each course, and each pass, gives 12 months' access, so staff can come back to the material before an audit or an accreditation visit.

Courses or a pass: the cheapest way to buy

Each role card on this page shows the courses that role needs, the price one by one, and a pass when it is close to or cheaper than the courses. We mark the cheaper option as best value and never show a saving that is not real.

The Awareness Pass costs US$99 and opens all 65 awareness courses for 12 months, so a staff member can also take GDPR, ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and many more. For the other roles, the card shows at today's prices whether the listed courses or a pass is cheaper, and marks that option as best value.

If one person needs most of the pack, for example a compliance director who covers privacy, security and quality, the All-Access Pass opens all 16 courses on this page, and every other course in the catalogue, for US$499 per person for 12 months.

A pass also removes a decision people tend to put off. Once a learner holds a pass, adding a course for a new customer, a new regulation or a new job costs nothing more for the rest of the 12 months, and that is often when the second and third courses get taken.

When you train 11 people or more, every price drops by 20% per person, and by 30% from 51. You can mix plans in one order.

Training records that stand up to an audit

Training helps you in an audit, an accreditation visit or an investigation only if you can prove it happened. Sterling Academy gives you three kinds of evidence.

The first is the certificate for each person: named, dated, tied to a specific course and final exam, and verifiable by QR code.

The second is the organisation console. Your training administrator invites people, assigns each person only the courses their role needs, and sees who has started, who is in progress, who has stalled and who has finished, by course and by person. People who have not started are easy to find and remind, which matters in an organisation where staff rotate between wards and sites.

The third is the report. You can download training records for an audit, a payer's due-diligence questionnaire or your own management review.

A training plan for a healthcare organisation

Start with privacy and security for everyone. The first priority in most organisations is the awareness training every staff member needs. Assign the every-staff courses to all employees and contractors who handle patient information, starting with new joiners and the departments that handle the most data: registration, billing, medical records and IT.

Train the people who run the programme. Your privacy and security officers take their courses next, so they can review your policies, risk assessment and incident procedures with what they have learned.

Build quality and laboratory competence. Quality leads and laboratory staff take their implementation courses alongside the actual work of building or improving the management system, so the training supports the project.

Prepare your internal auditors. Internal auditors finish their courses before your first internal audit cycle, then audit with the methods they have learned.

Keep it current. Each course gives 12 months' access. Use the console each year to see whose training is due, and assign courses to new starters as they join.

Health tech and digital health companies

If you build software, devices or services for healthcare, your customers will ask you the same questions they ask themselves, usually in a security questionnaire before they sign. Hospitals and health systems want to know that your staff are trained on HIPAA, that you run an information security management system, and often that you hold ISO/IEC 27001 certification. The every-staff courses on this page give your whole team the awareness they need, and the privacy and security officer courses give your compliance lead the tools to run the programme. If you also build AI features, the ISO/IEC 42001 and AI risk courses in the catalogue help your product team design them responsibly.

Training gaps assessors often find in healthcare

Whatever the standard or the assessor, a few training gaps come up again and again in healthcare organisations. Checking for them before the audit saves a finding.

Training that stops at induction. Many organisations train people thoroughly when they join and never again. Privacy and security risks change every year, especially phishing and ransomware. A yearly refresher, with a record for each person, answers the question before it is asked.

Clinical staff left out. Security training is often aimed at office and IT staff, while doctors, nurses and therapists, who handle the most sensitive information, are left out because their time is scarce. Short online courses that fit around shifts close this gap.

Contractors and agency staff without records. Temporary staff often have access to the same systems as employees, but no training record. Assessors notice. Invite them to the same console and assign the same every-staff courses.

No link between role and training. An assessor will ask why a person received the training they did. A training matrix that maps each role to its courses, like the role cards on this page, is the clearest answer.

Corrective actions that treat symptoms. Quality and laboratory assessors look closely at how complaints, incidents and nonconformities are handled. When the same problem keeps returning, it usually means the root cause was never found. Training in root cause analysis and CAPA for quality leads makes the difference.

Internal audits that only tick boxes. An internal audit that never finds anything rarely convinces an external assessor. Trained internal auditors plan by risk, sample properly and write findings that lead to improvement.

Frequently asked questions

Does this training meet HIPAA's training requirement?

HIPAA requires you to train your workforce on your privacy policies and to run a security awareness and training programme. Sterling Academy's HIPAA courses teach the rules and the good practice behind them, and give you a certificate for each person as evidence. Training on your own organisation's specific policies and procedures should sit alongside them.

Can clinical staff take the courses on night shifts or between patients?

Yes. Every course runs on a phone, tablet or computer, 24/7, and learners can stop and continue where they left off.

We are a clinical laboratory. Which courses do we need?

Start with the quality and laboratory card: ISO 15189 implementation, root cause analysis and management review. Add the ISO 15189 internal auditor course for your auditors. The catalogue also includes ISO 15189 awareness, and measurement uncertainty and method validation courses written for ISO/IEC 17025 laboratories.

How often should staff be retrained?

Many organisations retrain on privacy and security every year. Each course and each pass gives 12 months' access, which matches an annual cycle.

Do accreditation and certification assessors accept these certificates?

Each certificate names the learner, the course and the date, and can be checked online by QR code. Sterling Academy courses carry the same content as Sterling's classroom training, whose certificates have been accepted by certification bodies at client audits.

Can agency and part-time staff use the same account?

Yes. Your administrator invites anyone who needs training and assigns only the courses their role needs.

What is ISO 7101?

ISO 7101 is the ISO management system standard for quality in healthcare organisations. The awareness course explains what it asks of a hospital or clinic and how it fits with the work staff already do.

Can Sterling help us get certified as well as trained?

Yes. Sterling's consultants help healthcare providers and health tech companies achieve ISO 9001, ISO 15189 and ISO/IEC 27001 certification and HIPAA compliance. Ask for a team proposal on this page.

Can we start with one department?

Yes. Many organisations start with the departments that handle the most patient data, such as registration, billing and medical records, then roll out to clinical teams. Buy places for the first group and add more when you need them.

Is our data safe on Sterling Academy?

The courses never ask for patient information, and none needs to be entered. The platform holds learner details, course progress and results, which your administrator sees in the console.

Do the courses cover health data laws outside the United States?

Yes. Alongside HIPAA, the catalogue includes GDPR awareness for organisations that handle the health data of people in the European Union, and ISO/IEC 27701 courses for building a privacy management system that works across several countries' laws.
