Information Security & Privacy

Information Security and Data Privacy Training: Standards, Laws and Frameworks

Information security and data privacy training for companies that must prove to clients, regulators and auditors that their people protect data. Perhaps a client contract now asks for ISO/IEC 27001 or SOC 2, a payment brand wants PCI DSS evidence, a US healthcare client needs HIPAA safeguards, or new EU rules such as NIS2, DORA or the AI Act now apply to you. This is where the courses for each of those meet.

Every course teaches the requirement itself and how it works in practice, with built examples at companies such as BPOs in Manila and Mumbai, a payroll processor, a hospital and a defence supplier. Train one person or a whole team: courses are on demand, with practice questions after every module, a final exam and a certificate in each learner's name, and a client administrator who assigns courses and follows progress.

Information security and data privacy training teaches staff and specialists what security standards, privacy laws and cyber regulations require: ISO/IEC 27001 and related standards, GDPR and other privacy laws, HIPAA, PCI DSS, SOC 2, NIS2, DORA, CMMC, NIST frameworks and AI rules, applied to everyday work and evidence.

Why training is part of every security and privacy requirement

Almost every security standard and privacy law expects people to be aware, competent and trained for their role. ISO/IEC 27001 requires awareness and competence, PCI DSS requires a security awareness programme, the HIPAA Security Rule includes security awareness and training among its administrative safeguards, and NIS2 and DORA place training duties on management and staff. Auditors ask for the evidence.

Most incidents still start with people: a phishing e-mail, a reused password, a customer record sent to the wrong address, an agent talked into resetting an account. Training that names those situations and the right response is the cheapest control you can add, and the training record is the evidence clients and auditors ask to see.

What auditors ask your people, and how the courses prepare them

Certification auditors, SOC 2 auditors, PCI assessors and client auditors do not stop at the training records. They interview staff, often at random: an agent on the floor, a developer, a manager, a new joiner. They want to hear that people know the policy, recognise a threat and know what to do next. Vague answers turn into findings, and in a client audit they can cost the contract.

Every course is built around those questions, with the requirement, a built example from companies like yours and the expected behaviour. These are typical of what to expect:

  • What would you do if you received an e-mail asking you to reset a customer's account or change bank details?
  • Where do you report a security incident or a lost device, and how quickly?
  • Which customer data are you allowed to see, and what must you never write down or copy?
  • How do you check the identity of a caller before you discuss an account?
  • What does our clean desk and screen lock rule require when you leave your workstation?
  • When did you last complete security or privacy training, and what did it cover?

Courses by need

The same courses, grouped by the job they do for you.

Many companies meet several of these needs at once. An outsourcing provider in Manila or Mumbai serving US and European clients may face ISO/IEC 27001, PCI DSS, HIPAA and GDPR in the same year, and a software company selling to enterprises may be asked for SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001 and AI governance together. The groups below let you build one plan: a common awareness layer for every employee, then the specialist courses for the owner of each requirement, so people are not trained twice on the same behaviours under different names.

Security and privacy awareness for every employee

How to choose the right security or privacy course

Start from the requirement in front of you: the clause in a client contract, the standard your auditor will use, or the regulation that now applies to your business. The index above lists each one with the courses that answer it. Many companies face several at once. A BPO serving US and EU clients, for example, may need ISO/IEC 27001, PCI DSS, HIPAA and GDPR together. In that case, one awareness course for everyone plus the specialist course for each owner is usually enough, because the core behaviours repeat across them.

Then match the depth to the role. Awareness courses suit every employee and the annual refresher most standards expect. The implementation, controls and risk courses suit the people who build and run the programme, and the internal auditor courses suit the people who check it before the external auditor does.

  • Every employee: Information Security Essentials, plus the awareness course for each law or standard that applies.
  • ISMS and privacy teams: the implementation, controls, risk assessment and DPIA courses.
  • Client assurance: SOC 2 or PCI DSS controls for the control owners preparing the report or assessment.
  • Management: NIS2, DORA and EU AI Act awareness, where these rules place duties on the management body.

What your company gets

Every course gives each learner a verifiable certificate in their name, which anyone can check online by its number or QR code, and a LinkedIn badge to share. Certification to ISO/IEC 27001, a SOC 2 report and PCI DSS validation are the work of certification bodies, auditors and assessors; our courses prepare your people for that work and give you the training evidence it asks for. Client administrators see who has completed which course, with each learner's final exam result and the date of each certificate, so the training records an auditor asks for are ready before the audit begins.

  • Courses on the current edition of each standard and the current text of each law, named on every course page.
  • One place for the standards, laws and frameworks your clients and regulators ask about, so different teams are trained consistently.
  • Built examples from real incidents and enforcement cases, so staff recognise the situations they will meet.
  • A certificate in each learner's name and progress reports showing who has completed, useful evidence when a client, auditor or regulator asks for your training records.
  • A client administrator who adds staff, assigns courses by role and follows progress, with one invoice for your organisation.
  • Courses built by Sterling's experts, who help clients implement these standards every day.

Building a security awareness programme auditors accept

Auditors and assessors look for a programme, not a single course: content that matches the risks people face, training on joining and at least once a year, extra training for roles with more access, and records that show who completed what and when. PCI DSS, ISO/IEC 27001, HIPAA, SOC 2, NIS2 and DORA all test some version of this.

Most companies build it in five steps. The online courses supply the content and the records; your own policies, phishing simulations and team briefings complete it.

  • A role list: who handles personal data, card data, health data or privileged access, and which courses each needs.
  • Training on joining, before access is granted, and an annual refresher for everyone.
  • Role-based training for IT staff with privileged access, developers, privacy staff and managers with specific duties.
  • Records ready for the audit: completion reports and certificates by person, kept with your policy acknowledgements.
  • Measuring effect: exam results, phishing test trends and incidents caused by people, reviewed by management.

How the courses work

Every course is online and on demand, on a laptop, tablet or phone. Learners watch short video modules, answer practice questions with feedback after each one, and finish with a multiple-choice final exam drawn from the course's question bank, with one retake. Awareness courses award a Certificate of Completion. Implementation, practitioner and internal auditor courses award a Certificate of Competence when the exam criteria are met.

Awareness courses suit whole workforces and new joiners. The deeper courses suit the people who own the system: ISMS managers, privacy officers, compliance leads, internal auditors and IT security teams.

Train your team: company plans

Tell us how many people and which roles need training, and the standards or laws you work under, and we will propose the courses and send a quote. Your client administrator then adds staff, assigns courses and follows progress from one dashboard, with one invoice.

Article 4 requires providers and deployers of AI systems to take measures to ensure a sufficient level of AI literacy among their staff, taking into account their knowledge and the context of use. AI Literacy and Responsible Use of Generative AI is built for that, with EU AI Act Awareness for management.

Do learners get a certificate for each course?

Yes. Each learner who completes a course and takes the final exam receives a certificate in their name, verifiable online. It records the individual's training.

Who does NIS2 apply to?

NIS2 applies to medium and large entities in sectors listed in the Directive, such as energy, transport, banking, health, digital infrastructure, ICT service management, manufacturing of critical products and digital providers, with some smaller entities included by national law. Suppliers to in-scope entities are often asked to meet the same expectations through contracts. NIS2 Awareness explains the scope and duties.

Do you have an ISO 27001 internal auditor course?

Yes. The ISO/IEC 27001 Internal Auditor course takes auditors through planning the audit programme, auditing the clauses and Annex A controls, writing findings and following up, so your internal audits are ready for the certification body's review.

Does HIPAA apply to a BPO or software vendor outside the US?

If you create, receive, keep or transmit protected health information for a US covered entity, you are usually a business associate under a business associate agreement, wherever you are based, and the Security Rule safeguards, including training, apply to you. HIPAA Awareness and HIPAA Implementation are written for those teams.
